THEY'RE HERE! SHOULD YOU USE AN AVATAR?

I knew the time would come. It was inevitable. Nonetheless, that didn’t mean I was looking forward to it.

And now, it’s happened.

WHY?

Recently, I attended an online networking event where one participant used an avatar. But why? And before anyone feels the need to point it out, I do understand that for some people, especially those who are neurodiverse or perhaps dealing with some form of illness, injury or disability, being able to use an avatar could be a step forward in terms of their visibility and interaction with others. However, outwith those or similar circumstances…

BE AN AWESOME ViDEO STAR!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a great advocate for being the face of your brand. I used to be incredibly camera shy so I completely understand how hard it can be to get in front of a camera for photographs, let alone for ViDEO. But, I also know how powerful speaking on camera can be, whether that’s in online meetings or doing Pieces to Camera, live or pre-recorded. Furthermore, I am living proof that you can overcome being camera shy and I know that anyone and everyone can be an Awesome ViDEO Star!

THERE IS GOOD REASON

Opting not to utilise the benefits of showing your face and speaking on camera really is missing a trick. There is so much that you can express in your body language, facial expressions and tone of voice and there is good reason for that expression about your eyes being the window to your soul. Studies have shown that maintaining eye contact with your audience not only helps to keep their interest but also helps to convince them of your authenticity and trustworthiness.

HUMANITY

In these times of hybrid working, and especially for anyone working from home or working alone, human interaction is surely something we want more, not less, of.
