WHEN YOU JUST DON'T FEEL LIKE SHOWING UP...
Let’s face it, there are some days when you really don’t feel like showing up; you can’t be bothered, you’re too tired, you feel overwhelmed, one of your planets is retrograding...
Sometimes there’s so much going on in your life with kids, family, work, home, Covid, building work, parcels undelivered because they’ve been sent to the wrong address... grrrrr! (It’s ok, the recipients of my parcel very kindly delivered it to me after the courier messed up.) Anyway, we all have those days, don’t we? I’m sure it’s not just me…
SO, WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE SHOWING UP?
One of the most common pieces of advice is to think about your WHY.
Why did you start your business?
Why do you do what you do?
It can be useful to have a Vision Board to help you with this (if you don’t already have one) or you could write a list of all your reasons and have that handy to refer to in times of need!
From answering your WHYs, you can rediscover your GOALS.
What is it that you want to achieve with and through your business?
What do you want to change in the world?
That should put some fire in your belly!
ALTHOUGH, SOMETIMES EVEN THAT ISN'T ENOUGH...
Which leads me to what is often the missing piece of the puzzle for many – your WHOs!
For me, there are two types of WHOs:
WHO would be proud of you for showing up? and
WHO would benefit from you showing up?
In my case, I don’t want to let my kids down.
What kind of example would I be setting if I said, “Oh, I’m really not up to it today, there’s too much going on”? What would I be teaching my kids about how to cope with life?
Do I want them in turn to say, “I’m not going to school today, I’m just not up to it”?
Of course, I’d also feel like I was letting myself down. My self-esteem is not going anywhere good if I walk away at the first sign of despondency. And, as I'm running my business as a single parent, I really can't afford to not show up!
AND THE OTHER MAJOR WHO...
The other major WHO has to be your Clients and Customers!
How are you helping them by not showing up?
Rather, I’d say you’re doing a disservice to your public by not showing up.
Presumably, you want to help them in some way with your business; with your products or with your services.
You want to make their life better, solve problems for them and help them.
How can you help them if you don’t show up?
Think of the difference you could make to their lives.
Think of the happiness and ease that you can bring to them.
Now, that’s got to be worth showing up for, isn’t it?
BUT, IF YOU'RE HAVING ONE OF THOSE DAYS WHEN EVEN THAT ISN'T ENOUGH...
The flip side of all this – I do love a good debate! – is that sometimes you do just need to walk away!
There will be times when you need to take a break; recharge your batteries and take time for a bit of self-love.
It’s easy to forget to look after yourself when you’re busy looking after everyone else.
The best option is to build some ‘me time’ into your week so that you have something to give from. It’s that old scenario of if you’re on a plane and the oxygen masks drop down, you should put your own mask on first so that you’re then able to help others. You can’t help anyone if you have no oxygen! And the same goes for self-care and self-love!
YOU NEED TO GET REALLY GOOD AT RECOGNISING WHEN YOU NEED TO SHOW UP AND WHEN YOU NEED TO WALK AWAY!
If you’ve gone through your WHYs and your WHOs and you still don’t want to show up, then maybe it’s time to take a break.
And a break doesn’t need to be forever, it can be getting up and walking around your house; listening to a piece of music you love; going outside for a walk; meeting a friend (restrictions allowing) for a cuppa and a chat; practising meditation; reading a book; going for a Reiki treatment; or doing anything that gives you a complete break and will help to restore your equilibrium.
The important thing is that you take a break, recharge and come back ready and willing to get stuck in!
So, in summary -
Remember your WHYs
Remember your WHOs
and SHOW UP
so that you can
BE SEEN BE HEARD BE KNOWN!
And we will love you for it!
(If none of the above works for you then please think about talking to someone and seeking help whether that be through Reiki, Theta Healing, NLP or your GP.)
