If a picture paints a thousand words, just think what a video could do for your business!

Do you remember when Telly Savalas sang that memorable song, “If”? (I use the word ‘sing’ loosely, of course!) Do you remember Telly Savalas, AKA Kojack? Of course, when Mr Savalas sang those words, he probably wasn’t thinking about how many images a video contains or it’s impact on delivering your business message to possibly thousands or millions of people around the world. (I’m not sure what the sales figures were like for that song, it was a wee while ago…)

Anyway, there are so many opportunities for getting your business message out there these days. Did you know that in 2015, 63% of UK consumers used social media and among UK Millenials that figure went up to 86%?* There is huge potential on social media for reaching people all over the world and really, if a single picture is said to paint a thousand words, just think how many words you could convey with even a 10 second video!

Video is basically made up of lots of still images which are put together and shown in quick succession to give the illusion of movement. When you were in school, were you ever shown one of those books of illustrations that you could flick to make the pictures look like they were moving? I have vague memories of one showing a woman skipping and I wonder what the modern day equivalent would be – fingers and thumbs on a game controller?!

Sooooo, you might have heard that video comes in two formats, and the one you use will depend on where you live. PAL (Phase Alternating Line) video is mainly used in Europe, Australia, the Middle East and Asia whereas NTSC (National Television System Committee) is used in the Americas and Japan. You might also be interested to know that these two formats have different frame rates (frame rates are the number of single images flicked together in one second to show, for example, that woman skipping) – PAL has a frame rate of 25fps whilst NTSC has 30fps. So that adds up to a lot of images for a full length video!

Now, think about what you could show in your video. Your beautiful, hand crafted cakes, products or designs, you busy at work creating, coaching, providing an amazing service or even reading from your latest book! There is so much that you can show in your video without using lengthy and wordy descriptions, not just the end product but the process, the workplace or the mega satisfied, happy customer. Tell your story and share it with the world! If what you do is good then don’t hide it under a bush – get it out there, shine the spotlight on it and tell the world ‘cos the world wants to know! And the easiest way to do that? Well, you don’t need to get the paintbrush out…
